How to Break Free from Organization Overwhelm

Oct 01, 2024

When there is an overload of 'stuff' in your home, you might experience decluttering paralysis. You don't know where to start; the project feels too big, too time-consuming, and too emotionally draining. The fear of making a mistake, like getting rid of something you might need later, or letting go of an item with sentimental value and regretting it, causes inaction.

This is completely normal! Many of my clients have experienced it, and I have too. Here's how to overcome organization overwhelm ⤵

Progress > Perfection

If the end goal feels unattainable, you likely won't start. You don't need an Instagram worthy-home by tomorrow, and you don't need to decide what to do with every sentimental item in your home by this week. It's not about being perfect, it's about creating systems that work for you, one step at a time! If you focus on starting to organize one area today, like your closet, you might not have a perfectly organized home, but you will have a tidy closet. Better than nothing, right?! Remember, you can't make progress if you don't take the first step.

"What if I need it later?"

The fear of regret is powerful and halters so many people from decluttering: "What if I have to rebuy it?" "What if I give it away and feel guilty because the person who gave it to me might be upset?"

I recommend creating a 'maybe box.'

Put everything that you THINK you might want to let go of in one box at the back of your closet, and give yourself a time frame: 6 months, let's say. If you don't pull anything out of the box in the next 6 months, give yourself permission to let the items go.

Anything that you don't use for 6 months, you very likely won't need again. Your mental space is more important than the clutter in your physical space. If you do end up needing to re-buy the item down the line, it can be an opportunity to repurchase a version that fits your needs and lifestyle in the future. You're making room for things that matter to you right now.

Start Somewhere

The surest way to overcome decluttering paralysis is to simply start somewhere. Whether it's tackling a room, focusing on a small corner, or just sorting through a single drawer, taking that first step is crucial. Remember, progress is more important than perfection! A good way to kickstart your organizing journey can be to gather a few tools that  make the process easier and more enjoyable.

I’ve curated a selection of my favourite products that have helped many in their organization efforts, all available in my Amazon storefronts. With the right products, you’ll find that organizing your space can be not only manageable but also rewarding. So, take that first step—you’ll be amazed at how much lighter you feel once you simply start!
