Do you ever feel like you’re drowning in clutter but can’t find the time to get organized? The 20/10 method might just be the solution you need. The idea of tackling a disorganized house can be so overwhelming that it’s hard to know where to start. As things pile up, the clutter grows, making it tough to find anything and even tougher to stay motivated. If this sounds like your struggle, the 20/10 method is perfect for you.

An organized home saves you time, money, and energy, reduces stress, and gives you a greater sense of control. Tidy spaces lower stress hormones (cortisol) and help balance the central nervous system.

So, what exactly is the 20/10 method? It’s a simple routine that I practice: you organize for 20 minutes and then take a 10-minute break. This mix of focused work and rest makes decluttering more manageable and even enjoyable.

You’d be amazed at how much you can get done in just 20 minutes. Many people aim to clean, tidy and organize everything in one go, which often leads to feeling overwhelmed and quitting. There is no way these tasks should be lumped together. The 20/10 method breaks this cycle by setting small, realistic goals that keep you moving forward without burning out. This approach not only helps you clear out the clutter but also builds a sense of accomplishment and progress.

I understand that it's not easy to jump into decluttering just because you read about a method like the 20/10 rule. The real key to making it work is all about focus and making it a priority. Think about why you want to make decluttering a priority. Is it to regain time and energy, enjoy your home more, spend more quality time with your family, or improve your mental and physical health? Choose something that truly matters to you, and you’ll have a better chance of staying focused and committed. When you're faced with tough decisions about whether to keep or let go of items, ask yourself: Do I love this item? Do I use this item? Would I buy this item again today? Stay focused on why you started this journey and remember your reasons. Don’t let hesitation hold you back. Face the decisions, make them, and move on without looking back. I am right beside you helping you every step of the way.  YOU CAN DO THIS!

How to Use the 20/10 Method

All you need is a timer, a trash bag, a box for donations, and a bin for items that belong elsewhere. This method works for any area in your home, from your junk drawer to your pantry. Start by setting your timer for 20 minutes and jumping in. Throw away trash, place items for donation in the box, and collect items that need to go to other rooms in the bin. You can also try to put the items that belong in other rooms into those rooms, but don't get distracted while stopping in the new room- go back to the room where you set the timer.

For specific spaces like a shelf, junk drawers, or bathroom drawers, it helps to empty everything out first and then sort through items as you put them back. Pick a small, manageable area to avoid running out of time. Make sure to minimize distractions by putting your phone on do not disturb and playing some music or a podcast to stay focused.

When the timer goes off, take a 10-minute break. Use this time to relax and reward yourself—make a cup of tea, stretch, or do something you enjoy. This break is crucial for keeping your motivation high and preventing burnout. You are essentially setting your adrenaline back to a baseline so that you can stay in the game when you go back to the task. After your break, you can either start another 20-minute session or continue another day. By chipping away at the clutter bit by bit, you’ll make significant progress over perfection.

The 20/10 method is a game-changer for anyone looking to get organized. Give it a try—set a timer and see how much you can accomplish in just 20 minutes.
